Vitoria is situated in the Basque region of Spain in the province of Álava. It is also known as Vitoria-Gasteiz. It is the next biggest city in the Basque region to Bilbao.

Situated ten kilometres from the city is Vitoria Gasteiz Airport. This is a small airport which mainly deals with cargo flights. Last year (2008) almost sixty eight thousand passengers used the airport with the main routes offered by Iberia who fly to Barcelona and Madrid. Ryanair formally used the airport for flights from Dublin and Stansted however they have now cancelled all Vitoria flights.

There are also taxis available from Vitoria Airport. It will cost you around fifteen euro to get to Vitoria and around eighty euro to get to Bilbao. There are no bus services available from the airport.

There are two annual music festivals held in the area. The Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival runs for a week usually from around the second week of July while the Azkena Rock Festival, normally begins in late August.

The patron saint of Vitoria is celebrated every year at the Fiestas de la Blanca festival (4th – 9th August). Expect to see plenty of street theatre and open air music events as well as plenty of traditional food.

An interesting little museum can be found in the shape of the Fournier Museum of Playing Cards. Long since part of the foundation of Vitoria you can expect to see six thousand plus playing card types here.
