Vigo can be found in Galicia on the North East coast of Spain in the province of Pontevedra. Vigo Airport or Vigo-Peinador International Airport as it is also known is located nine kilometres from Vigo City. 

Vigo Airport has experienced rapid growth in passenger numbers over the last decade. A comparison of numbers in 1995 and 2008 shows an increase of almost nine hundred thousand passengers. Almost eighteen thousand flights used Vigo Airport in 2008.

The airport mainly deals with domestic flights with Air Europa flying to Madrid, Tenerife and Lanzarote while Iberia Airlines fly to Bilbao, Valencia and Madrid and Spanair fly to Barcelona. Vueling Airlines offer flights to Heathrow. Irish travelers may find it easiest to get a direct flight to nearby Santiago de Compostela Airport which is seventy three kilometres from Vigo.

There is a self service restaurant in the airport offering traditional local fare. Seafood is a good option here as is sampling some of the local wines.

Transport options from the airport includes a car hire Vigo service which can be booked in advance right here. There are four Vigo car hire firms located at the airport. Buses run around every half an hour into Vigo and cost just over a euro. Taxis are also available with a fare to Vigo costing around eighteen euro and a fare to Pontvedra costing around thirty five euro.

One of the things Vigo is well known for is its successful football team Celta Vigo. Vigo’s football stadium was used to host a game during the 1982 world cup.
